What is PRP therapy?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for hair loss is a three-step medical treatment in which a person's blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp. PRP injections trigger natural hair growth and maintain it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft. Sometimes this approach is combined with other hair loss procedures or medications. PRP therapy requires three treatments 4-6 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments are required every 4-6 months.
PRP injection process:
Here's what to expect from a typical PRP injection process: A healthcare professional will draw a sample of your blood. The amount of the sample depends on where the PRP will be injected. For example, the amount of blood taken for injection into the scalp is 20 mille litters. The blood is placed into a centrifuge. This is a machine that spins around very quickly, causing the blood components to separate. The separation process takes about 15 minutes. A technologist takes the separated plasma and prepares it for injection into the affected area. Your doctor will then inject the PRP into the affected area. PRP is autologous, which means it contains substances that come directly from your own body. However, there are risks from the injection itself, including: infection, nerve injuries, pain at the injection site and tissue damage. You should discuss these potential risks with your doctor, as well as the steps your doctor will take to minimize these risks. Most people can continue their daily activities following PRP injections. Because PRP injections are intended to promote healing or growth, you may not notice an immediate difference after receiving the injections. Because PRP therapy involves injecting your own blood into your scalp, you aren't at risk for getting a communicable disease. Still any therapy that involves injections always carries a risk of side effects such as: injury to blood vessels or nerves, infection, calcification at the injection points and scar tissue. There's also the chance that you could have a negative reaction to the anesthetic used in the therapy. If you decide to pursue PRP therapy for hair loss, let your doctor know in advance about your tolerance to anesthetics.
Generally speaking, there are few steps to preparing for PRP injections. However, PRP can be injected in different ways. For example, sometimes a topical numbing lidocaine solution is applied to your scalp before injection. You may have to arrive early to a treatment session for this to be applied. Other times, a local anesthetic is mixed with the PRP to reduce any discomfort
